I was barely ten years old when I witnessed my father, now deceased, assaulting my mother. Over time, this event became a taboo subject within my family. After spending three years in Cuba studying, I return to my mother with the desire to confront this forbidden silence and bring back from oblivion the name of a man who was both admired and despised. What emerges is a family story unfolding through an intimate dialogue between a son and his mother about male violence—my father’s, that of a society, and the violence I fear may also reside within me.
